I thought I'd try something a little different with this website. Since both Lysele and I are new to the auto-crating game. I thought it might be kinda neat to have a blog following our experiences trying to get Trillies running. Kind of an insiders look to everything we've achieved, argued over, cried about and had cause for the random eye twitch.
I'm not going to post every day but I will try to keep up as we get closer and closer. Maybe this will encourage other "newbies" to autocrat "big scary events" and also show the rest of the SCA world that with a little bit of Ard Chreagian elbow grease and a whole lot of teamwork great things can be achieved.
So just after everyone got home from Pennsic last year, a team of us started looking for a new site. We wanted something that could accommodate 300-500+ people, have flushies or at least lots of porta potties, room for parking, showers, large battle fields for armoured and rapier, good sized area for archery and thrown weapons, ease of access to camp sites, the list goes on and on and on..
We quickly found out that our wants/needs were making things difficult to find places that checked all the boxes. In fact in 2 - 3 months of searching only one place really had all our bases covered and then some.. but they wanted over $18000 for the weekend. Yep.. that's right 18 thousand dollars.. even talking them down the lowest they'd go was $10k for the weekend. To which I blinked once.. maybe twice and I believe the words.. "hell" and "no" came out of my mouth because that basically gave us just the fields with no amenities at all. I was a very very sad Viking.
We saw a few more sites and there were a few more possibilities but again nothing that really jumped out at us and I have to admit I was starting to panic until I got a message on Facebook.
"have you thought about the farm?" it said.
Oooooh, Aurelia you lovely lovely person you.
No I hadn't because I thought crops were going in and figured only the back field would be available to us for the event if any..to which I was told
"ooo no.. the whole farm (except where the birds are and the house) is available."
I do believe Hetty and my eyeballs bugged out of our heads and off we went to the farm to have a look.
With the additional field space this was a site that was doable.. and so planning began... We had our staff picked out, decided to do a theme competition to be different, and came up with ways to make the site "pretty" I don't want to spoil it so I'm not going to get into what exactly we are doing tho.
A plan was hatched and now we are just waiting for the spring to get all our plans put into motion.
Meeting with the various people in charge of the different aspects and making sure everyone has what they need making lists, checking lists, making more lists.. going cross eyed at the lists seems to be what we are up to now. Oh and stockpiling the building supplies and other things we will need for around the site.. I wonder just how much of my little apartment is going to be "Trilliumized" :o
I got to admit though. I'm glad I have Lysele. She's a logistical master.. anything we need she can find for better or cheaper or both. I'm more the PR / ideas woman and she makes things happen like magic.
So that's the first main lesson of auto-crating a big scary event.. have a good partner in crime. It is a lot less stressful if you are both on the same page.
